COVID-19 Updates from me, numbers 1-12, are below in the previous two blog posts.
I did not expect to send another email this way, but leaving Sunday’s newsletter with recent events unsaid did not feel right, and I wanted to pass on a few resources and insights to possibly help make sense of all that does not make sense.
I think some meaningful conversations this week involved those talking about feelings of inadequacy and even insecurity about how to feel, act and even understand all that is happening in our city, country, and world with the recent arrest and death of George Floyd. We are helpless with COVID-19 but we had instructions on how to “do our part” to fight the escalation of the virus. This movement happening around us leaves many feeling helpless again, but also searching for ways to feel anything but helpless.
Understanding who you are, who you want to be, is all part of the process of self-love. Dahleen Glanton in the Chicago Tribune held up a mirror to many of us on Tuesday: https://www.chicagotribune.com/columns/dahleen-glanton/ct-racism-white-people-george-floyd-20200531-tmdbj52ownc7fegdargh75k4qq-story.html
Here is a great list of resources if you are looking for “something” to do, whether it is to vote, read, organize, or educate: https://medium.com/equality-includes-you/what-white-people-can-do-for-racial-justice-f2d18b0e0234

June 2020 offered so many more quality resources. Here are some additional ones:
- This site offers visuals, books, webinars, trainings…. You can spend a lot of time on this site: https://www.socialwork.career/2020/06/anti-racism-resources-for-social-workers-and-therapists.html?fbclid=IwAR2kFPlm4xsKnQXNJgPcCu0iDLsjEDXz4mGHEwhjoPYgn7btfa-tn2HpAbE
- A friend of mine is a mom of an African American son and she wrote this blog recently. They live in Evanston: https://allonapostcard.blogspot.com/2020/06/whitebird-photo-by-karin-lindstrom.html?fbclid=IwAR22G_ib0CO1neLhNYt5D4U9BjueGd_VT7iphlPx1rqUrNxnuViwXy15Dv8
- There are a lot of strong words in (author of White Fragility) Robin DiAngelo’s recent talk with ETHS principal. One of my takeaways is: As a means to understanding racism, Dr. DiAngelo strongly suggests that all white people ask themselves over and over:What does it mean to be white? How does my race shape my life? Here is the full video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neV_GlvUGn4
I hope you are taking care of yourself. You are absorbing a lot of input. Make sure you have places to release and recharge.
Warmly,
Lynn
