A Collaborative, Person-Centered Approach (with a Brain-Based Focus)
David believes strongly in quality of care. His therapeutic process is focused and collaborative. He assesses obstacles in order to understand the core meaning, and together, he works with his clients to challenge—and overcome—those obstacles. A smart, intuitive listener, and kind but also direct, he sees his role as supportive, providing a safe space that creates and allows this transformative process to occur. As a former U.S. Army soldier, David brings a deep understanding of resilience, discipline, and the impact of trauma—experience that shapes his compassionate and practical approach.
Therapy Specialties and Who He Helps
David has extensive experience in trauma treatment, addictions, and couples counseling, and he also works with clients who are navigating depression, anxiety, grief, loss, or the stress of major life changes. He supports individuals and families working through parenting challenges, career transitions, or relationship struggles. His work is informed by CBT, EMDR, and trauma-focused methods, but he also brings in relaxation strategies (somatic therapy) and other approaches that best fit the client in front of him. He also welcomes and affirms clients who identify as LGBTQIA+, supporting them in exploring identity, strengthening relationships, and addressing the external challenges they may face.
Couples Counseling and Relationship Work
David works with couples who feel off course or weighed down by grievances and unmet expectations. He helps partners enhance communication, nurture respect and admiration, and understand the “disconnectors” that get in the way. In this process, couples not only resolve conflicts but also build resilience in their relationship—so they can weather challenges and reconnect to the foundation that first brought them together. As an EMDR therapist in Northfield, IL, David also supports couples and families in Highland Park, Glenview, and other North Shore communities, helping them rebuild communication and connection.
Clinical Experience with Children, Teens, Adults, and Veterans
David’s background includes providing CBT, EMDR, conflict resolution, relaxation techniques, and trauma/PTSD/C-PTSD clinical mental health therapy. In addition, he has vast experience in addictions (ASAM trained) as well as grief, loss, and bereavement—recognizing that there is an intimately deep processing of each stage that he helps guide others through to help make sense of it all. His diverse experience spans almost 15 years in community centers and homeless shelters; with children, adolescents, adults, veterans, and families; in inpatient hospital settings (IOP and PHP); and in private practice.
